Initiative to Save Our Sharks #QueensOfTheOcean

Zamia has been working closely with the Saving Our Sharks Foundation (SOSF) to help develop and guide their latest campaign: #QueensOfTheOcean #ReinasdelMar.

Through large-scale programs across the region, SOSF has saved thousands of sharks and engaged hundreds of partners. The foundation’s goal is to “build a global movement to save sharks” and influence how people perceive shark conservation, fostering a deeper understanding of their importance to the health of oceans and reefs.

The Queens of the Ocean campaign focuses on female bull sharks that visit Playa del Carmen each year to give birth to their pups. These females play a critical role in maintaining shark populations, which continue to face threats, as many species are listed on the IUCN Red List. The campaign also includes the opportunity to win an exciting prize, featuring a shark diving experience for two people, two nights at a new luxury hotel, all meals included, and more.

Our results: Check out the campaign and join us! The Queens campaign has raised awareness about the ecological role of bull sharks in regional conservation and increased appreciation for mother sharks. Both the online community and the local community have grown around this symbol of hope for sharks. Local shark ambassadors and dive shops proudly received their “Shark Ambassador Kit” as part of their commitment to conservation and are actively promoting best practices for shark diving and sustainable tourism in the region. Most importantly, it has been a remarkable shark season, with a significant increase in shark sightings and citizen science collaboration among registered divers across the region. We are pleased to report that change and collaboration for shark conservation are possible. Stay tuned! Zamia will be working with SOSF on a new campaign planned for spring 2023, with many surprises ahead.
